To keep cool and healthy:

  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Take frequent breaks. On the hottest days, avoid the outdoors altogether.
  • Wear loose-fitting, lightly colored clothing.
  • Protect yourself from the sun by wearing a hat or using an umbrella. Don't forget the sunscreen!
  • Schedule outdoor activities for cooler times of the day — before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
  • Let others know if you think the heat is making you sick. Dizziness, nausea, fatigue, decreased alertness or rapid heartbeat can be signs of heat illness.
  • If you are on medication or have a health problem, ask your doctor about how to deal with the heat. Also ask about drinking extra fluids and how that will interact with your medicines.
Get medical help right away if you have:
  • Hot, dry skin, but are not sweaty.
  • Confusion or loss of consciousness.
  • Frequent vomiting.
  • Shortness of breath or trouble breathing.
