Medicare provides information about the quality of care in home health agencies all across the country. That way, you and your family can make better decisions when you’re trying to choose a local agency to meet your needs. To find the information, go to www.medicare.gov, scroll down to “Search Tools” and click on “Home Health Compare.” You can also call 1-800-MEDICARE (TTY/TDD 1-877-486-2048).
Compare Care
To help you compare agencies, Medicare uses “quality measures” shown as percentages. For instance, one measure shows how many of an agency’s patients get better at walking or moving around. Another shows the percentage of patients who have to be admitted to the hospital. The measures come from information that Medicare and home health agencies collect.
The measures were chosen because they all have to do with helping patients recover and live on their own or with family after an illness. Also, Medicare wanted the measures to be important to patients and their families and easy to understand.
The information will be updated regularly, but keep in mind that the quality of health care can change quickly. You should get information from as many sources as possible. Talk to people who have used the agency, and call the agency to ask questions.
