Cervical Cancer

Widespread use of cervical cancer screening has reduced the death rate for cervical cancer dramatically over the past several decades. Early detection of cervical cancer results in a five-year survival rate of greater than 90 percent. Yet, 50 percent of women in the U.S. who develop cervical cancer have never been screened.
Arkansas’ Medicaid recipients are well behind the national average in receiving Pap smears. AFMC’s Cervical Cancer Screening Project aims to help Arkansas primary care providers increase Pap smear testing in the state. The project’s indicator is cervical cancer screening following preventive health guidelines.

Knowing the facts (statistics and current guidelines) about cervical cancer screening:

• Developing a plan to increase screening
• Sending reminder postcards when screening or follow-up is needed
• Using appropriate screening method for each patient

Improving office systems:

• Grouping gynecologic examination appointments
• Previsit screening to identify patients who are due for Pap testing
• Making arrangements with ob/gyn providers to expedite referrals
