Overview and Indicators
Controlling blood pressure remains one of the most cost-effective ways to maintain the health status of patients, especially those with diabetes, renal failure and cardiovascular disease. Available medications and lifestyle modifications make blood pressure control a very attainable goal. However, many patients do not comply with recommended therapy.
Some suggested strategies to improve patient compliance include:
- Improving communication during a clinical encounter
- Prescribing simpler regimens
- Explaining and reinforcing the benefits and possible side effects of a medication
- Giving consideration to the patient’s lifestyle and cost of medications
- Having effective therapeutic relationships with patients
