Appropriate Care Measures (ACMs):
Focus on overall care
Appropriate care measures are a new way of reporting hospital performance on Medicare quality measures related to congestive heart failure, pneumonia and acute myocardial infarction. ACMs reflect the percentage of patients who received all the recognized components of care for a specific condition. High performance on several components of care, combined with a low performance on a single element, can result in a low score on that ACM.
This new reporting framework is designed to stress the importance of comprehensive high-quality care for each patient. ACMs will likely become the basis for many pay-for-performance activities in the hospital sector. Hospitals desiring increased support and guidance on the new measures can request participation in an intensive participation group (IPG) with AFMC.

Radar graphs:
- Simultaneously display many performance measures
- Each measure is plotted on a different axis
- Low performance rates are plotted towards the center of the graph, high performance rates near the periphery of each axis
- Ideal care (on the following graphs) would result in the entire "radar" being colored
- Aggregated performance on the measures is plotted on the top axis of the subsequent graphs
