MAY 10, 2024; ATLANTA, GA — In April, Sydney Lewis, MPH, AFMC’s data sciences supervisor, was selected to present her findings on a state-funded peer recovery support grant at the 2024 Rx and Illicit Drug Summit. The summit is the largest, most influential event addressing the opioid crisis, where experts from across the nation share their strategies and put their ideas into action.
Sydney was one of 100 selected applicants who presented at the Summit. In front of over 3,000 attendees, Sydney shared details of her work with the State of New Hampshire to analyze and evaluate data involving participation in peer recovery support programs for individuals over the age of 17 struggling to overcome substance use disorder (SUD).
As part of AFMC’s data sciences team, Sydney analyzed data collected by recovery community organizations to identify which peer recovery activities performed at these organizations were most successful in assisting individuals with gaining, maintaining, and enhancing recovery from SUD.
Her findings indicated several factors that positively contributed to an individual’s recovery:
- Active, frequent participation in peer recovery support programs
- Increased participation in exercise and meditation programs
- Completed recovery plan goals
Her findings also revealed that other factors hinder an individual’s recovery:
- Unstable housing for those receiving peer recovery support services
- Lack of transportation, particularly in rural areas
AFMC’s data analysis and evaluation for this grant informed the State of New Hampshire of factors that enhanced or diminished participant recovery from SUD. State leaders used Sydney’s findings to determine the best activities and programs to fund to ensure that individuals met positive recovery outcomes.
