AFMC Supports Cardiac Health with AHA Heart Walk, Resource Library

MAY 21, 2024; NORTH LITTLE ROCK — AFMC sponsored the American Heart Association (AHA) Heart Walk, AHA’s premier fundraising event promoting the importance of cardiac health.

Despite a muggy, cloudy day, several AFMC employees and their families attended the event, with everyone walking at least 2 miles (and some walking even more)! Altogether, AFMC joined over 1,200 walkers and helped raise over $200,000 to help save lives from Arkansas’ first and fifth leading causes of death — heart disease and stroke.

With heart disease as the leading cause of mortality in our state, plus having loved ones as survivors, I'm proud that AFMC sponsors the American Heart Association and the 2024 Central Arkansas Heart Walk. AHA's work within Arkansas extends far and wide — funding research, advocating for food and nutrition programs, ensuring patients receive the best quality heart and stroke care, and providing CPR to Arkansans. I am excited that our AFMC HEARTbeats team comes together each year to get our hearts pumping and raise funds to support this great cause. — Mandy Palmer, Director, AFMC Outreach Quality

More than half of all heart attack victims are over the age of 65. In Arkansas, about 30 people are hospitalized from stroke every day. For over 50 years, AFMC has developed lasting relationships with state leaders in cardiac health, including the American Heart Association, the Arkansas Heart Hospital, the Arkansas Department of Health, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, and other leading organizations.

For the benefit of our employees and the communities they serve, AFMC has supported many nonprofit organizations and educational organizations throughout the years that support our mission. We provide education and evaluation services to reach our goal of “healthy people, healthy businesses, healthy communities."

Participating in the Central Arkansas Heart Walk provided AFMC with the perfect opportunity to promote health and wellness for ourselves, our company, and the communities that we serve. — Alison McEntire, RN, Outreach Specialist, AFMC Outreach Quality

Our team of registered nurses, outreach specialists, and communications experts develop educational resources for providers and their patients on a variety of medical conditions, prevention techniques, and self-management processes. With support and assistance from the Arkansas Department of Human Services Division of Medical Services, AFMC created the “Dealing with Heart Failure” resource guide. This guide, designed to look like a deck of cards, teaches patients how to live with heart failure and take self-management steps to develop a “winning hand.”
